about james

Prior to training as a professional actor James gained an honours degree in Japanese Studies from Durham University and then began training for the qualifications necessary for the British Stunt Register. During this period of training he became qualified to an advanced level in stage combat and worked as both a fitness and massage professional. Various roles in theatre and in front of the camera during this time led to his decision to follow a career in acting and then trained at The City Lit in London completing their Advanced Performance Diploma in July 2012.

Since turning professional he has performed both nationally and internationally on stage and screen including performances at The Bord Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin and for Discovery and Sky.

James is also a professional photographer specialising in fashion, portraits and headshots for actors and business professionals. He trains in martial arts, has interests in art and poetry and likes motorbikes and cats.

"James is a deeply intuitive actor, committed to textual interpretation while still being completely grounded in his physicality.  100% reliable on and off stage, and an absolute pleasure to work with."

-Sharon Burrell, Artistic Director - To The Moon

REVIEW & Testimonial

"..rock-solid performance from James Heatlie as the neurotic Axel."

-Michael Billington, The Guardian***

-

"With characterisation at the heart of Playing With Fire, the success of the play depends on well-realised performances - Heatlie and Sheffield, in particular displayed a palpable intensity."

-Ed Nightingale, The Gizzle Review

-

"James Heatlie is suave as Axel."

-Carolin Kopplin, ukTheatre.net

 _

"Heatlie is superb as Axel... he undoubtedly makes Axel more attractive than Knut...there is not a shadow of a doubt that his wife will turn her back on her husband's superior lust-worthy physical charms for the mental  emotional bonds of love she has with Axel."

-Art Barrow, The POLiTiKER Review

-

"James is a deeply intuitive actor, committed to textual interpretation while still being completely grounded in his physicality.  100% reliable on and off stage, and an absolute pleasure to work with."

-Sharon Burrell, Artistic Director - To The Moon

"James is a wonderfully committed, well rounded actor. He is very gifted and generous and has been an absolute joy to work with."
 -Anna Ostergren, Director

"James is the sort of actor that the second he's on set with you, you soon realise it would never have been the same without him. He makes an irreplaceable presence both on and off the camera. James has a genuine personality with a confident social ability to integrate with all cast and crew, yet, in front of the camera he is an exceptionally professional actor who clearly understands his role and will perform beyond your expectations. He is a true all rounder and a credit to anyone who has the pleasure of working with him."

-Rebecca Gravil, Director

 -

"James is a hugely watchable and truthful actor, with great charm and charisma. I have had the pleasure to direct him in a number of projects. He has proved to be a great member of the company and an asset to any production."

-Petina Hapgood, Artistic Director - Goodmann Productions

 -

"James has been a joy to work with, right through the audition stage to the final day of shooting.  I was particularly impressed with his physical performance and improvisation, both from the heart and with conviction.  His performance in my short film Poppy is both strong and incredibly moving.  James was able to work with direction, offer suggestion and helped to collaborate on a number of occasions.  I would not hesitate to work with him again, it would be a pleasure."

-Lauren Jay Howard, Director

 -

"Working with James on this project was a really collaborative experience; his own ideas about the character, with particular regards as to his movement and physicality, really helped to inform and shape the design process of the costume. He was fully committed throughout, always enthused and gave an engaging and characterful performance at the show which the audience really responded to."
-Rachel Taylor, Artistic Director/Costume Designer

"James was a joy to work with on a intense and maverick music video shoot. A considerate and focused actor, he delivered on a perfect lead performance.

He had a genuine passion to help create my vision and was more than happy to get his hands dirty. James was animated and expressive, creating the exact tone I was looking for.

James' friendly and calm interaction, plus his ability to jump straight into character and achieve what was asked of him, allowed us to create a productive flow to a dense 2 day shoot.

James' performance skills brought out a multi-layered character and ambiguous role. Conveying both a dark side and a humorous side, switches in character traits, and shaping the narrative,  whilst simultaneously performing a very physical lip-sync of the vocals, James delivered in clarity on a convoluted and difficult role."

 -Stephen James Smith, Director

 -

"I had the pleasure of working with James on my latest short film "Waking Up" where James played the part of Psychiatrist Dr. William Grimm.  I have experienced James as a very professional and reliable person. He brought a commitment and passion to the project that exceeded my expectations. While being determined to develop a strong three-dimensional character, he was still always open to suggestions. Particularly interesting about watching him work was, that he very much defined his performance through his physicality. His willingness to share his knowledge and experience with the entire crew and cast in combination with his professionalism was crucial for the whole making of the film.  The most memorable moment of working with James, was the shooting of the films the final scene. The emotional intensity, James brought to his character in the scene was incredible. Not only did he manage to deliver such a powerful performance that made the entire crew tear up, but he also managed to repeat this intensity in every single take.  Off set, he is a very likeable person and just a great guy. His strong determination and motivation led to an excellence performance that carries the film. I couldn't have wished for a better Will and hope to have the opportunity to work again with him in the future."
-Finn H Drude, Director

 -

" I find James a pleasure to work with. He is a conscientious actor and will always throw himself wholeheartedly and conscientiously into anything he is given."
-Vivienne Rochester, Director
